A rare litra from Petra
Lot 37
SICILY. Petra. 354/3-344 BC. Litra (Bronze, 31 mm, 31.27 g, 7 h). [ΠETPINΩN] Head of Zeus Eleutherios to right. Rev. Aphrodite seated right, holding dove in her left hand and placing her right on seat. CNS III, 1. HGC 2, 1097. Very rare and unusually attractive for this difficult issue. Minor flan faults as usual, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

This large and somewhat clunky type is the only issue ever struck by Petra, a little known small settlement in northwestern Sicily.
